Life and Loss

I will be posting how domestic life and motherhood has begun to influence my work. Ever since my daughter Emilia was born at home 17 months ago I have had this bed sheet up on my window to create a dim environment good for sleeping. I have spent many hours looking at the light coming through it. When I started this piece I found out I was pregnant again and within the eleven weeks it took me to make this piece, I lost the baby. The light signifies the hope of a new life and the dark, the grief of loosing it. I call this painting, “Bye, Bye Baby Beluga.”

  1. I had black sheets up in Gigi’s room for the entire 2 years we lived at our previous house. How beautiful that you turned a somewhat crude piece of home life into a work of art.
